One week in Paradise

Filed Under (Exam, Friends, Games, Home, Movies, News, Review, Video)

Been just over a week since I’ve got home. The daily routine has mostly consisted of eat, read, watch TV, check teh interwebz with a considerable amount of sleep between these activities. Other stuff included were catching up with lots of friends which was quite nice, definitely good to see some old faces again, have some good meals at our old favourites, and the likes.

On a sadder note, the world has lost two things this week, both of which/whom I have respected. The first one is the legendary Kodak film, Kodachrome, a transparency film which has been manufactured for nearly 75 years before Kodak took the decision to stop production earlier this week. From the point of view of Kodak, it seems reasonable since it accounted for less than 1% of its sales and there is only one lab left in the world which has the capability to process this film since it is quite complex, and Dwayne’s Photo in Kansas has said that they will continue to process the film until late 2010. However, it will definitely be missed by many film enthusiasts including me, who revered the film like a god. It was the same film used to capture the world famous Afghan girl photo by Steve McCurry in 1984. And this momentous calls for Paul Simon’s classic song ‘Mama, dont take my Kodachrome away’.

The other loss was  a man, although some say otherwise, nevertheless, known as the ‘King of Pop’. I must admit his death came as quite a shock to me, I somehow took his existence for granted and regardless of all the controversies he has been in, I’m sure everyone agrees that he made some pretty damn awesome music. My playlist for today has simply been all of the King’s albums on shuffle. May his soul rest if peace.

On a more positive note, I got my exam results earlier this week and I somehow managed to scrape a 70.7% overall, which is a  1st Class and all I wanted. Next year will be tougher, with a 10,000 word dissertation and all, but it’ll be the test of my mettle to score a 1st Class next year too.

Watched Terminator: Salvation today, barely worth the visit. Just 2 hours of mindless violence and action wrapped around a weak excuse for a story. Christian Bale is a normally a good actor but he doesnt come close to Arnie as the classic Terminator, and Terminator 2 still remains my favourite of the series.

Also played Max Payne 2 today, such a beautiful game to play, I do hope Max Payne 3 doesnt turn out as a bad as it looks.

And thats all for now folks, more updates on life and the world soon!

The Result of Soul Searching

Travel. Time. Destiny.

Man has forever tried to find the meaning of life.

Some say its 42. And as much as I do agree with it, sometimes, we do need to look beyond numbers because there is no greater lie than statistics.

After hours of wondering, pondering, and walking on my own “thinking path“, I dont claim to have solved this ever lasting question but I may have come to some conclusions of my own which explain the way forward. Strangely enough, it comes back down to religion. It comes back to Lord Krishna’s message to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita – Do your duty.

Simple but strong. Nothing too vague so that the common man can understand it but still complex enough to baffle the most learned of minds.

There is a lot of potential argument to be raised against the message, especially with the freedom loving youth of today. I dont blame them. Its in your nature to argue but people will hopefully realize that life is a journey of happiness to yourself and those around you.

I can see questions arising asking what one’s duty is. One’s duty is to make the world a better place for yourself and everyone else. This may change from person to person and faith to faith but it more or less points down to the same basic principle.

And as always a picture is worth a thousand words and a video is worth a thousand pictures so I’m embedding a clip from the tamil movie ‘Devar Magan’ in which Kamal and Sivaji discuss the points I mentioned above. It is subtitled for those who dont know Tamil.

For those who are simply too busy to watch the full clip for 5 minutes, here is a brief summary. The video is an interaction between Sivaji and Kamal. Sivaji is Kamal’s father and the leader of their village. Kamal has been educated in a foreign country and after have witnessed a bloody massacre in the village, wishes to leave the place for better lands. Sivaji, in all his wisdom, explains to Kamal, that being an educated youth, it is Kamals’ duty to induce change in the society and running away leaving the problems behind is simply cowardice. It is his duty to do so, and the rewards will be reaped by society, his children and future generations to come. Kamal retorts saying that it’s going to take centuries to do that and he would probably die before that. But Sivaji cleverly replies saying that nobody can stop him from dying but if he dies after having a lived a life helpful to everyone, there is pride in that death.

And thats pretty much the core of the scene, apart from the few extra bits here and there. It enforces my previous claim of doing one’s duty with a more powerful reason behind it. A reason that the world will remember you after you’ve gone.

Pride. Honour. Virtue. Principle. Things that have been forgotten by many today but still remain essential to living a better life.

The Graham Norton Show

Filed Under (Media, Movies, Places, Review, Video)

On Tuesday Night, I had the chance to go and watch the filming of the Graham Norton Show live in London, thanks to a friend who managed to get 4 tickets.

The show started at about 1845 but we had to get there by 1800 so that we could seated in time. We had priority tickets which allowed us to jump a majority of the queue. The show kicked off on time with a warm up presenter who was quite funny and introduced us to the various elements of the filming of the show. After his brief talk, Graham Norton himself came onto the stage and went on about this slightly disgusting but funny story of his previous weekend. With that story done, the main show was about to start, the title music started playing and we saw Norton come to the stage again but with much more of a spin and style to his walk this time.

The Graham Norton Show Title

The filming of the show lasted for 2 hours but we didnt even feel the time pass by. The guests of the show were Oscar winning French actress Juliette Binoche and chef extraordinaire Gordon Ramsay. The entire show was hilarious had the whole audience laughing their hearts out. The fact that the show is based, not on just interviewing the guests but several different elements as well, makes it very humorous and doesnt get boring. At the beginning of the show, Juliette seemed a bit lost and Gordon seemed to enjoy discreetly making fun of the French which she didnt understand. But over the course of the show, she realised that it wasnt a straightforward interview show and joined in on the fun which made it even more enjoyable.

One of the first things that struck me when I walked into the studio, was the lighting system. There were about 100 different lights hanging from the ceiling, each affecting the overall lighting of the show a little. I was overwhelmed by these spectacular and spent a good amount of time simple examining them and the accessories they had. The cameras used were very impressive as well. They had around 5 cameras on the ground and one camera on the crane. Watching all the crew do their job made me realise that Graham Norton is only a small part of the show and that a huge amount of effort goes into making each episode.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience which we finished off with a great meal at Chinatown.

Britain’s got talent

Filed Under (Friends, Humour, Media, News, Video)

I’ve been ardently following the semi-finals of Britain’s got talent over the past week along with my friends. One hour, every night for 5 days lead to a lot of swearing at the TV, swearing at each other and making fun of innumerable auditions. Its been good fun and the finals of the show were held on Saturday.

As always, all of us had our favourites, the people who we wanted to win. My personal favourites were ‘Signature’ a dance group of two Indians, who had a combined style of Michael Jackson and Bhangra which proved very effective and popular. I quite liked their style and the fact that they were Indians was a huge plus point. The other group who I liked was ‘Escala’, a troupe of 4 beautiful girls who played the violin in a pretty spectacular way.

I watched intently to see who the winner would be, and when they had cut down the participants from 10 to 3, only one of my favourites remained, Signature. I cant say I really liked the other 2 of the final 3 so I hoped that Signature would win. Then, when only 2 remained, the final winner was to be announced. However, as fate would have it, Signature did not win, and the winner was this 14 year old kid named George Sampson who was quite good at his rain dance act. I was shocked that Signature did not win, probably along with thousands of others who would’ve been heartbroken.

I am very proud of Signature, for the tremendous efforts that they would have put into their dance, for the unique style that they created, for making all Indians proud, and for not giving up without a fight. I’m sure that they will have a bright future ahead of them.

You can watch the first audition of Signature here, their performance in the semi-finals here and their dazzling finale here.

And for those who’ve already watched the audition and want to listen to the mix they used, you can listen to it here, its called Nachna Onda Nei by Tigerstyle with Kaka Bhania.

Eagles Forever

Filed Under (School, Site News, Video)

I’ve uploaded all the HPS videos which were on this site to YouTube so that you can view the videos without having to download them to your computer. The videos will continue to remain on this site so that those of you who wish to download them can still do so.

In addition to the existing videos, I have added a new video titled ‘Eagles Forever’ which I had originally planned to be screened at our graduation ceremony. However, that ceremony never happened and I was never able to show the video to my classmates. I had given a few of my friends a copy of the video but hadnt released it ‘officially’ only because I had not completed it. I still havent completed it and it probably will take awhile before I complete and therefore, I decided to release it today.

The video is a montage of some of the best memories at school. For some of you, it may only be a video but for some of us, it is much more than a video. It is the record of an experience that has gone by us. An experience which many of us will never forget. An experience which will continue to be one of the best. And this video was made to exist as a witness to that fabulous experience.

Anyways, enough chit chat, I shall link you to the video now. You can download the video here and watch the video on YouTube here. Feel free to give any positive or negative feedback.

EAGLES FOREVER!

Happy Republic Day

Filed Under (Festival, Games, Review, Video)

Today is the 58th Republic Day, and we supposedly had French President Nicolas Sarkozy as our guest of honour in Delhi. So, anyways, Happy Republic Day to everyone. I played Portal all night yesterday along with the help of a couple of friends. It was a lot of fun and is definitely a great game. It requires you to use your brain extensively which made it even more exciting. We finished the game after playing for about 4 hours, taking turns for certain parts. It was quite a short game but highly innovative. The game is basically about several puzzles which can be solved using your Portal gun. You progress to the next room after finishing one puzzle. Each puzzle is tougher than the previous one and slowly introduces new elements into the game. At the beginning of the game, you can only shoot blue portals but after a certain level, you can shoot both blue and orange portals. For those who are still confused about the whole concept of Portals, let me explain. You can shoot Portals with your gun and the blue one is connected to the orange one. If you walk through the blue one, you’ll come out of the orange one, which, if used properly, can lead to some very complex and interesting situations. For example, you can shoot a blue one next to you and an orange one at a higher place which you cannot reach by jumping. When you walk through the blue portal next to you, you will come out at the orange one above. If you are still confused, this video should be very helpful, it is the trailer for the game.

The game has a lot of dark and subtle humour which has become very popular all across the gaming society. The final credits song after the game is really hilarious and I feel that everyone should watch it. If you havent played the game, but plan to, then you might not want to watch it since it has some spoilers but if you dont plan to play it, then you must watch this video. I’ve posted it below. And click here to view the lyrics to the song.
