A birthday and a quarter

Filed Under (Friends, Home, Life, Site News)

I turned 19 on Wednesday. Yep, nineteen years of life have already passed by. Nineteen is  a strange age to be. Its the in-between age of youth and adult. Eighteen is always regarded as the “fun” age to be and all that jazz. Twenty is the big “no longer a teen” grown up age of responsibility and other things I dont want to talk about. And nineteen is stuck between these two biggies, not knowing what to do, and just hanging about trying to be cool and not “kewl”.

The Birthday Portrait

My birthday started off like every other day in the history of mankind. Dull and boring. Never did I expect for a single second that it would turn out the way it did. Lunch was good, with a surprise from two close friends, and tons of laughter. After reluctantly bidding farewell to them, it was back home to reading ‘The Economist’. The usual, the usual.

The fun kicked in after dinner. Another random surprise from some friends, with whom I ended up going on a second show movie at 11 at night, followed by some consumption of certain, lets say, beverages and then a trip to Charminar at 2 in the morning to have what is possibly the best Biryani and Chai I’ve ever had but I suspect that the beverages we consumed earlier may have enhanced the taste. And thats how my birthday ended. Riding shotgun on a Bullet on Necklace road. A very memorable birthday, something I probably will never forget and something I definitely want to do again!

The Transformation into Jules Winnfield

Filed Under (Life, Movies, Photography, Site News)

Roughly 6 months ago, I decided that I wanted to grow a beard like Jules Winnfield, played by Samuel L. Jackson in the legendary movie, Pulp Fiction. After about a month of not shaving and some careful and precise shaving earlier today, I can confidently say that the result has been achieved. I’ve posted a step by step visual guide of the transformation of the beard below. (Click on images for higher res)

Drunken Blogging

Filed Under (Exam, Friends, Photography, Site News, University)

Yes, I am reasonably drunken right now so please forgive any spelling/grammatical mistakes. Perhaps my first time doing drunken blogging as far as I can recall right now.

And the funny part is we all got drunk playing the Dr.Horrible Sing Along drinking game. It was immense fun and Koppaberg Mixed Fruit is quite divine. And it is the first time in the history of our house that all four of us got simultaneously drunk.

Coming to life, exams have been going on splendidly well, I’ve finished four of them successfully, and just one remains on Monday. The other extra curricular activities have decreased slightly but not ceased completely, I went Gliding last weekend and was allowed by the instructor to do everything from launch to landing, pretty much like a solo flight but with the instructor behind me to ensure that all was good. That was brilliant fun as always. Photos are up on Flickr.

Weather has improved to a nice, warm and sunny situation but with occasional showers now and then. The sun sets at around 9PM and rises by 5AM which gives us quite a lot of sunlight during the day.

I’ve been taking more digital photos recently, primarily due to lack of funds to process film but after going over some old film photos, I once again realized that digital can simply never substitute the beauty and glory of film. Scanning a negative is simply not the same as seeing a true optical print. Each film has its specialized and unique look, all different but still wonderful, while all digital cameras, from tiny compacts to gigantic SLRs pretty much share a similar outcome without a decent bit of processing.

Nevertheless, I shall leave the reader in peace now and try and sober up for a night of photo taking.

New Features and Changes -

New Theme
As everyone may have noticed, we’ve got a new theme up and running. I’ve gone for a cleaner look this time with a single sidebar. The theme is called ‘SP142‘ by Ask Design. I have heavily modified the theme to suit my needs. Its been almost a year since a redesign and I thought it was time to have a change. You can view the previous design here.

New Logo
The new header is adorned with a custom made logo by David Airey. You can read the full story about how I won the logo worth $2,000 here. Many thanks to David for coming up with this innovative and unique logo. I have also used the logo for the favicon.

Rotating Header
The new header changes every time you refresh the page. Go ahead, refresh and check! Currently, there are 3 different headers and I plan to add more soon.

Dynamic Stylesheets
This is a bit more geeky and technical side of the website, I’ve enabled CSS Switching via Javascript depending on the resolution of your browser. This is done so that the fluid width adjusts to the optimal size regardless of the resolution. You can try the same with this great piece of code.

Better Syndication
I hope you have noticed the big blue RSS button on the right. There is also an email subscription form on the right for those who dont use RSS readers. You will be updated with an email every time I make a post here so you can keep updated with the latest content easily. If you havent already subscribed vis RSS or email, please do so now.

Latest Photos
The sidebar now is constantly updated with the latest photos I upload on Flickr. The thumbnails of the 6 newest photos are visible on the sidebar and you can click on each photo to view the full size of it. You can also choose to view my photostream by clicking the appropriate links above and below the photos.

Portfolio
I’ve put together a collection of my best photographs in a flash portfolio which can be viewed here.

Connect
On the sidebar, you can now view links to connect to my profile on other websites, I will also be occasionally adding in my some frequently visited websites.

Mobile version
A dedicated mobile version of the site has also been launched. When you view the website from any mobile phone, you will be shown a version which has been optimized from mobile phones. However, I havent tested this feature yet and I request anyone with internet on their mobile phone to check this.

If you cannot view the new design, please delete your cache and refresh the page. I must warn you that this version is not perfect yet so if you do see any problems/bugs, please do report them to me either by commenting on this post or by emailing me.

Please leave your valuable comments and thoughts on the new design.

The End of a Year in Photographs

Filed Under (365 Day Project, Flickr, Friends, Home, Photography, Site News)

Around this time last year, I decided to embark on a journey that, over the course of a year, took me to many places, it made me do things I would have otherwise never done, it led me to meet new people, it changed the way I saw things, it had more effect on my life than I thought it ever would.

It was the 365 Day Project, a resolution to take one good photograph everyday from the 9th of September 2007 to the 8th of September 2008. It isnt any special date, just a random on which I thought that it would be fun I started the project. I did not know if I would have the will power to complete it but I thought that it would be interesting if I gave it a try and I’ve never regretted that decision to start the project.

The project has definitely fulfilled its purpose – to improve my photography skills. Even though I still consider myself far from the professionals, I have definitely improved by a remarkable level over 366 days and I am pleased about it. It has also had several positive side effects such as making me learn new things about photography, and whenever I took a photograph of a new and unusual thing, I used to read up on that as well and this has increased my general knowledge too.

I am of mixed feelings today. I am happy since I am no longer obliged to produce a good photo everyday but I also feel sad since it’s almost like a part of me has left me. I’m sure I’ll feel better over time and I will probably do another 365 Day Project sometime later but not in the near future because I’ll be entering my second year at University and academics does have more importance than hobbies. I will continue photographs, no doubt about that, but the frequency might subside a little. The final photograph of the project can be viewed here.

You can see the set of all the photographs here and you can also view a slideshow of all the photographs here. I hope you enjoyed watching the photos everyday for the past year, you can keep yourself updated with the photos I take in the future by visiting my Flickr Photostream often or adding me as a contact on Flickr or subscribing to this RSS Feed.

Thanks to my family for supporting me with this project, my friends for always being there to participate or help with the project, and every single person who has been following this project. Thank you!

Update – I’ve found out that the final photo has made the frontpage of Flickr Explore!

Sacrificing Goats and Eating Brains.

Update – This post won the Killer Titles Project at ProBlogger. Many thanks to Darren for hosting the contest and also to all the readers. This is possibly the first time I’ve ever won something meaningful.

Waddepalli.

No, I didnt make that word up. Waddepalli is a place in Warangal and I had pleasure of visiting the place on Sunday along with a few friends. We went there to witness the yearly local festival along with several other age old traditions. At 6:30 AM, we left from Hyderabad in a taxi and sped towards Warangal where we reached at around 10 AM after having stopped at a restaurant for (a sad) breakfast.

The festival had already kicked off by the time we reached there and people were thronging the small temple. Chicken sacrifices were abound with an average of one chicken losing its life every couple of minutes. You can see a photo of the chicken sacrifice here, but be warned, it is of a very graphic nature and I advise you to avoid it if you are easily offended by such things. After a quick refresh, we met the members of the Bhascker family who were kind enough to put up with us. Soon, we walked through the crowds for a what one could call a “VIP Darshan” and stood by the side taking photos of the beheading of the chickens.

They had a goat sacrifice occasionally of which I got some photos which you can see here, it is also of a very graphic nature, even more than the chicken one. After this, we got slightly bored of watching people walk in a line and decided to go visit the 1000 Pillar Temple.

Girls and boys.

Quite evidently, there werent actually 1000 visible pillars in the temple and it probably was a slight disappointment considering its impressive name. We then went to the Bhadrakali temple which was, in my opinion, much better than ol’ 1000 pillar. We prayed to a few gods there, had some Prasadam and walked across the landscape there. I wanted to stay for some more time but some members of our group for hungry and had to leave to get some lunch.

Procession

We went back to the Bhascker’s for lunch where were served freshly cooked spicy mutton curry with rice. I say ‘freshly cooked’ because the goat which was used for the curry was most probably alive a few hours before our meal. In that weather, you always feeling like having a nap after a meal like that but we stayed awake with the help of some playing cards and sheer stupidity in playing some card games. This did a good job of keeping us awake since we either laughing or cursing each other during most of the game.

The game soon got monotonous and the heat seemed to cool down as well so went for a walk guided by a local man. The local man was very enthusiastic to show us around the place and took us to the lake. The walk to the lake was filled with lots of interesting characters which kept us from getting bored. We found a nice tree and spent a lot of time sitting by the lake in the shade of the tree. And even though we wished to see sunset by the lake, we had to go back to the house for some more night time festivities.

Warangal Sunset

I changed my lens, from the 18-250mm to the classic 50mm 1.8, since the light was continuously decreasing. A couple of shots later, I recalled how much I’d loved the lens and had forgotten about its amazing capabilities.

As the sun slowly disappeared, a high powered halogen lamp and lots of multi colored chain lights were put up. All this provided excellent lighting and bokeh for the night shots which turned out much better than I expected. The colors of the saris, the gentle flame on the pots, and the kids running around, made for a nice atmosphere.

The flow of people finally died down after having gone on for more than 12 hours. We took this break as a chance and had some pretty good Ice Cream at a place called ‘Softy Don’. Soon after wolfing down the Ice Cream, we headed back home for dinner. Dinner consisted of some more mutton curry but the Pièce de résistance was the goat brain curry which not only tasted good but is also supposed to be very nutritious.

We decided to end the day with a second show movie but due to lack of choice, we went for ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ which turned to be a bad decision because it has to be the single worst Hindi movie I’ve ever seen. Salman Khan’s overaction, his brother’s even more overaction were too powerful to be overcome by Priyanka Chopra and her moves. The only partially good part of the movie were the songs, kudos to Sajid-Wajid. I slept through a good amount of the movie and by the time we got home after the movie was done, it was 2 AM.

Next day morning, we are up again at 5:30 AM getting ready to come back to Hyderabad. The journey back took 3 hours and we were back here by 10 after a wonderful and unique experience at Warangal. To see things which you dont really see everyday, and be in a place completely different from this world was bliss.

Photos are being slowly uploaded onto this set on Flickr, make sure you check back often for updates or subscribe to this RSS Feed to be notified when a new photo is uploaded into the set.

And you can now keep updated with the photo of the day by subscribing to this exclusive RSS Feed which will notify you when a photo is uploaded onto the set on Flickr.

I came across this highly amusing image of why you shouldnt piss off a engineer, take a look at it yourself here.

Another very witty article I read was about the 8 different types of annoying people you’ll find in Starbucks. I found the list to be quite accurate, read the article here to see if it reminds you of a trip to Starbucks.

People just come up with all sorts of crazy but innovative ideas these days. This list of the most awesome business card designs I have ever seen, reinforces that statement.

Viral marketing is the latest thing for all companies these days, Levis has done quite a good marketing campaign for its jeans with this strange and funny video of guys jumping into jeans.

And for the funniest story of the week, officials at Japan’s Narita airport have lost 142gms of cannabis after having placed it in a random passenger’s bag to test their security dogs. As fate may have it, the dogs were not able to sniff out the drugs and the officer has forgotten which bag he put it in.

Happenings in life

Filed Under (Exam, Flickr, Games, Photography, Review, Site News, University, Website)

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had meetings for the various clubs and societies at University and I was duly elected President of the Gliding Club, President of the Photography Society and Vice President of the Politics Society for the next academic year. I’m quite thrilled by these posts which I have undertaken and I shall do my best to ensure that I help all the societies equally.

I successfully spent the International Shutdown Day without using the computer all the day. I had to take photos of sports for most of the day so it was bit easier to refrain from using the computer since I had something to keep myself occupied with. I did feel the urge to use it in the night after I’d finished all my work but I managed to keep myself under control. And I hadn’t really missed many happenings on the internet as I saw on the next day.

Thanks to a friend, I finally got the chance to play the most coveted game of the year, Grand Theft Auto IV. I played the game on a Xbox 360 but I didn’t really care which I console I played it on as long as I got to play it. My first impressions of the game was the highly improved graphics from the previous games and the physics. Enough cant be said about the new physics engine which is very realistic and gives a whole new feel to the game. We also played the Multiplayer for sometime which was great, we had a bit of a lag but otherwise had a new and exciting experience. I tried to do a mission and I almost completed it when I got killed at the very end. I just cant get used to the dual joystick use in consoles since I prefer PC gaming. Regardless, if you’re going to get only one game this year, make sure it is GTA IV. You can watch a very good 10 minute video review of the game here.

I’ve made some changes to my wishlist, I’ve now amended it to include items that I actually want as opposed to things that would simply be nice to own. Take a look at the updated Wishlist here.

After many months of thinking, I bought myself a Flickr PRO Account yesterday. It offers unlimited upload of photos along with several other incredible features at a very reasonable price of approximately $2 a month. I shall be embedding the Flickr Gallery into the site soon. You can take a look at my Flickr Stream here.

We’ve got exams from next Monday and honestly, I have hardly studied anything. I really hope I get things done soon.

Eagles Forever

Filed Under (School, Site News, Video)

I’ve uploaded all the HPS videos which were on this site to YouTube so that you can view the videos without having to download them to your computer. The videos will continue to remain on this site so that those of you who wish to download them can still do so.

In addition to the existing videos, I have added a new video titled ‘Eagles Forever’ which I had originally planned to be screened at our graduation ceremony. However, that ceremony never happened and I was never able to show the video to my classmates. I had given a few of my friends a copy of the video but hadnt released it ‘officially’ only because I had not completed it. I still havent completed it and it probably will take awhile before I complete and therefore, I decided to release it today.

The video is a montage of some of the best memories at school. For some of you, it may only be a video but for some of us, it is much more than a video. It is the record of an experience that has gone by us. An experience which many of us will never forget. An experience which will continue to be one of the best. And this video was made to exist as a witness to that fabulous experience.

Anyways, enough chit chat, I shall link you to the video now. You can download the video here and watch the video on YouTube here. Feel free to give any positive or negative feedback.

EAGLES FOREVER!

Episode Two and News

Filed Under (Games, News, Review, Site News)

I finished Half Life 2: Episode Two yesterday. Another epic game by Valve. The story was great, gameplay was great, visuals were excellent, sound was mindblowing, I have absolutely no complaints about this game except for the fact that it was too short. I really feel like playing more of Half Life, so I guess I’ll start playing Half Life 2 again or Episode One.

On a sadder note, Indonesia’s former dictator, General Suharto, passed away on Sunday January 27th, aged 86. This may not mean much to you, but it has a sublime effect on me, knowing that I lived in Indonesia during his reign. May his soul rest in peace.

Sometimes, I think that I should get rid of my spectacles and go for contact lens but then this image changed that impression. A reason for all us specs wearers to continue wearing them.

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of one of the most popular toys around the world, Lego. I cant tell you how much I used to play with this as a kid, it’s good to know that it survived for so many years and hope it will continue to do so for the following generations. Google also commemorated this event with a special logo.

And coming to the local news, a Bugatti Veyron was given a parking ticket in downtown Manchester and a crowd supposedly cheered while a parking warden wrote him the ticket.

Another exciting yet not very useful tool for webmasters is this service which finds out other websites which are hosted on the same server as yours by performing a reverse IP domain check. I tried it myself and found out that discount-oriental-area-rugs.com, papayacoconut.com and meaningfuljewelry.com are hosted on the same server as mine. Give it a try yourself here.
