Photoclub Meet

We had another meet of the Hyderabad Photography Club today but this wasn’t a photoshoot but more of a meeting and a discussion. Since our meet was at Madhapur and I didn’t have my car handy, I went for a new method of transport - MMTS. It was a fun experience, they journey took only 15 minutes but the Hi-Tech city stop was quite far away from our meet location. All the autodrivers were demanding an exorbitant amount for a distance of hardly 4 kilometres so I gave them the finger and started walking. I was fortunate enough to get a shareauto after a few minutes of walking and I successfully reached our meet location.

At the meet, I met old friends, made some news ones and we had a great time. We also chatted about some ‘top-secret’ issues and events which I will reveal later on. I got my hands on the latest DSLRs and lenses, courtesy of all my friends there. Using a DSLR is an amazing feeling, the sound of the shutter, the view from the viewfinder, the beep of the autofocus, the click of the shutter button, all of these factors come together to make the perfect experience. Infact, I was so impressed by them that I decided to get myself one before 2008. I know that 2008 is a long time away but DSLRs are pretty expensive and I’ll be lucky if I can get myself a good one soon. Overall, I had a wonderful time today, and a good change from the daily boredom.

Yea…

Life has been pretty slow the past few days, hung out with friends a couple of days but we didn’t do much anyway. I’ve also been playing Half Life 2 Deathmatch quite frequently. You can find me hanging around at the GamesArena Team Deathmatch server. Its one of the better servers I’ve played on and it has one of the lowest latency levels(that means its faster).  Basically, I haven’t been doing anything other than sitting on the PC and watching TV all day, very boring.

Review : SwitchPlanet.com

Today, I’ll be writing my first website review for the SwitchPlanet.com which is a very useful site where people can trade their old DVDs, CDs and books with each other for free.

Registration is quite a simple process and you need not give all your details for becoming a member. And also for the sake of convenience, registration is not mandatory for viewing the listings. You can view the listings at your own leisure and register only when you spot something that you like. After logging in, you will be taken your own page where you can view your Account history, friends, switchbucs (I’ll come to this later) and many such details.

Currently, there are 4 categories of items, namely DVDs, CDs, Video Games, Books but they promise to include more soon. You can create your own catalogue of your current items by using the handy search available. You can select a category and search for items which you own. Once you find the relevant item, you’ll be able to add it to your catalogue by selecting ‘Have It’. Once you do that, you’ll be able to mention how much Switchbucks (Read the next para for more information on this) it’s worth, whether you would like to make it available for trading or not, and what’s included in the box. You can also click the ‘Have It’ link on any item you view to add it to your catalogue.

Now, coming to the currency of the SwitchPlanet - SwitchBucs. The whole point of introducing SwitchBucs is so that you and a person need not have an item that each other wants. For example, if you have a DVD of ‘Seinfeld’ and you want a DVD of ‘Heroes’, you will have have to find a person with a DVD of Heroes who also wants a DVD of Seinfeld and is willing to trade it. This type of coincidence is very rare and therefore, the usage the SwitchBucs. With SwitchBucs, you can sell your Seinfeld DVD to a person in exchange for a specified amount of SwitchBucs. You can later use the SwitchBucs that you’ve earned to trade for something you want. Incase you do not have enough Switchbucs to trade for an item, you can buy Switchbucs for dollars, the exchange rate being 1 USD for 1 Switchbuc. Personally, I think this is a very innovative idea which makes the whole process of trading easy and simple.

You can also maintain a ‘Wishlist’ and when the items in your wishlist are available, you will automatically be notified about it via email. You can view a organised catalogue of all the products available, the most wanted products and similar lists. The profile of the members are also available and you can add members as your friends and expand your network. Various groups and forums are also available to help out new users and to meet like minded people.

When someone requests an item you own, you have the option of either declining or accepting the request. On accepting a request, you will have to mail the item within 5 days. You will have to pay for the shipping by yourself but this is also an advantage when you are requesting an item the sender will have to pay for the shipping. Once the receiver confirms that he has received the item you have shipped, you will be credited with the necessary amount of Switchbucs.

Both the sender and receiver are protected by the aptly named ‘Switch Guarantee’ which ensures your safety. You will be credited with the amount of Switchbucs if the item is reported lost in mail, damaged, etc. This is made to ensure that everybody is a winner and I feel that this is a good move by SwitchPlanet.

The best part of the whole process is that it is completely free, except for the postage charges. The donations made by the users of the website is once again donated to charity organisations. Overall, I think it’s an excellent way to reuse and recycle old items and their mission statement denotes this -
“Use more…waste less.”

You can register for the website here and view thier list of items here.

Photoshoot : Gachibowli Rockwalk

I went with a few friends from the Photography Club yesterday for a Rock Walk organised by the Society to Save Rocks. We met at 3 in the afternoon within the city and reached the spot in Gachibowli by 4. Ironically, there was rock blasting activity going on next to the area but thankfully, the area where we were going had been deemed as a Heritage Site by HUDA, so the rocks there had no risk of being blown into a thousand pieces.

The walk lasted for a little more than 2 hours, all of which was spent taking photographs of the beautiful rock formations and landscapes. The area was spread out over a hill and we had a great time exploring the rocks and trying to get to the highest point. The view from the top was breathtaking and we stood there for quite some time just admiring the work of nature. We almost got lost a couple of times but fortunately, we were able to spot members of our team and find our way.

Taking photographs wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be. Since there was a great level of contrast between the sky and landscape, under ‘Auto’ mode, the camera would either set the exposure level for the sky or the land and thus, losing detail in the other. If the sky was metered, then the land would be underexposed and dark, and if the land was metered, the sky would be washed out and appear white. The problem was aggravated by the fact that I don’t own a polarizer and after a few shots, I decided to photograph in full manual mode and after that I was able to capture some beautiful scenes.

We couldnt stay up in the hill for sunset since the sun sets pretty late these days but I was able to get a few nice photographs from ground level too. We had tea and snacks after the walk. I met some new and interesting people and had a great time at the walk.

Confessions of a Filmmaker

“The boldest movie ever in Telugu Cinema Industry….”

Watch it online at its International Internet Movie Release, at this website. It is the first Indian Movie ever to have a Internet Release rather than a theatre release. This was done since the movie is of a provocative nature and might offend people if released publicly. The movie challenges the very basis of the Telugu Film Industry and talks about the life of an upcoming director in the film industry.

confessions-poster.jpg

The movie will not feature a love story or a comedy. It is the story of the life of a filmmaker who struggles to make a living because of the politics and complex issues existing in the current film industry. It is a movie which will show people the reality beneath the glamour. The story is interesting and has a twist at the end, I won’t spoil it for you, take a look yourself!

The main character of the movie is portrayed by Kamal Kamaraju, who put himself into the shoes of the character and altered his lifestyle to match the movie.

You can signup to watch the movie online here  for a small fee of 5$.

Episode One and Photography Exhibition

I finished Half Life 2 : Episode One yesterday, the ending was quite unexpected and I’m really looking forward to Episode Two. I really wanted to continue playing so I was playing parts of Half Life 2 with cheats today which was amazing fun since you can do whatever you’ve always wanted to do in game but couldn’t.

I went for a Kerala Photo exhibition a few days ago. Most of the photographs were quite spectacular and they were all on sale with prices ranging from Rs.6,000 to Rs.16,000. The art gallery where the exhibition was held had a great view and we took some great photographs from there. Today, I went to see the Secunderabad 200 Years photo exhibition. Although most of the photographs had been taken by Raja Deen Dayal, there were a few taken by foreigners too. Most of the photos were taken between 1880 and 1930 and they really provided an insight to the places and life in Secunderabad during that period.

Half Life 2 Episode One and News

I bought Half Life 2 Episode One yesterday and unfortunately my DVD Drive had to crap out at the same time. I gave it in for repairs since the warranty period had already expired, they technician said it would take atleast 2 days till it got repaired. I certainly couldn’t wait for that long before playing the game so I removed the DVD Drive out of my old computer and plugged it into my new PC. It took around an hour to install the game and I finally got it running after several updates.

image-hl2ep1cover.jpg

The game ran like a charm. The graphics were pretty much like Lost Coast but the gameplay had improved considerably. I’ve already finished about one thirds of the game and I’m sure I’ll be able to finish to soon. The storyline is also going on well and is well written. The commentary system is very useful and interesting, and the sounds in the game are also better.

Half Life 2 and Lightning

I successfully finished Half Life 2 today after a really long time. I bought it before my prefinals and had stopped playing since December until a few days ago. And today, after 2 hours of non-stop gameplay, I finished the game and I’m now looking forward to buying Episode One to continue with the incredible story. Half Life 2 is definitely the best game ever made!

It was raining heavily till about 30 mins ago and I tired taking some photographs of the lightning. It was the first time I was trying to take such photographs and I was able to take 3 good photographs after a lot of trial and error. I set the camera at a long exposure and after taking 76 photographs, 4 of them had traces of lightning bolts in them. You can check them out here.
