Playing Half Life 2 on the PC with a Wiimote

Posted in Gadgets, Games |

I found out about this great mod for Half Life 2 a few days ago which allows you to play Half Life 2 with your Wiimote and Nunchuck. You also require a Sensor Bar so you should either place your Wii next to your PC or you can make your own. Once you download the mod, its installs directly into Steam and does a few updates. You can install it for Half Life 2, Episode One and Lost Coast too. It’s displayed as separate games on the Steam Games list and requires to be connected to the internet to launch.

To connect your Wiimote to your computer, you’ll need a Bluetooth dongle and will have to discover it and set it as a ‘Human Interface Device’. Once thats done, let the bluetooth software run and launch the game.

Once launched, you are supposed to point your Wiimote at the the Sensor Bar and connect the Nunchuck and wait for it to recognise all of them. This will take a few minutes and once its over, the original Half Life 2 menu will fade in on the left. You can use your Wiimote to point and click at the menu in the centre but you will have to use the mouse for the other menus. I would suggest that you check the key mapping at first located under ‘WiiMote’, you will need to use the mouse for this. Once you’ve gone through the options, you can click on ‘New Game’ and select any level from the game. There’s also a tutorial mode available but it isnt necessary to play it, I feel that you can directly play the game and familiarize yourself with the controls.

It is recommended that you set yourself 3 feet from the screen but I felt that 4 - 5 feet was optimum for me, but it depends on the distance between your sensors(if you’ve made a custom sensor). The gameplay was amazing! The integration is perfect and ist hard to believe that the game wasnt made for use with the Wiimote. You can wave the nunchuck to swing the crowbar use the + and - keys to scroll through the weapons. The aiming system is near perfect with the Infrared pointers and is definitely a new experience. The joystick on the Nunchuck is used to move and strafe. The controls are completely customizable and you can set it according to your preferences.

I enjoyed playing it but the mod has room for improvement in certain aspects of the controls. Its is a great mod and the mod makers have done a great job. A must download for anyone who owns Half Life 2 and a Wii.
