Mumbai Nagariya

I went to Mumbai yesterday. It was a…uhh….interesting experience. It did have its ups and downs like any other trip but wasn’t very enjoyable. I spent most of the day waiting for something or the other.
The good parts were few. I had a great and delicious lunch. I also got my Schengen VISA successfully and easily.
The bad parts were worse. I missed the first plane back home due to a stupid mistake by Kingfisher Airlines and had to book another plane and came home at 11:30 in the night.

Mumbai is a good city but traffic conditions are BAD. Although there are several polite and good people around, the common man over there is rude and impatient unlike Hyderabad where even the poorest person is kind. In Hyderabad, if I take a photography of a complete stranger on the road, he smiles, but in Mumbai, he frowns. Hell, photography is not allowed in half the places there. I was just walking on the street taking pictures of the building when this watchman pops out of nowhere and asks me to stop taking photographs. The whole city is pretty much filled up with poor rude people and rich snobbish people and only a tiny percent of the people are kind hearted and polite. Mumbai has a lot to improve,

Uniform for one last time………

We had our last board exam today, Economics and I managed to finish the paper and do pretty well too. But most importantly, we wore our uniforms for the last time today, officially. While everyone was celebrating the end of the exams, I was thinking about how an whole era had passed by, just like that. Nine years. It sounds like an eternity but its all just one BIG memory now. I can still remember the first day I stepped into school to write the admission exam, I was impressed by the ‘cool’ police-looking uniforms as a seven year old. And today, we wore those ‘cool’ police-looking uniforms for the last time. Ever. The uniforms which we wore for the past 1800 days or more is now history…….

To commemorate this day, I’ve made a wallpaper for our school. The Hyderabad Public School. The school which has served us faithfully and will continue to serve the thousands who will study there.

The Airport and News

I went to airport to pick up some known people and as usual the plane was delayed by 20 minutes so I thought that I would stay there rather than come back home and go there again. I waited for around half an hour and during that time, I had seen the most different types of people in a single place. Ever since plane tickets became cheaper than train tickets, the airport has been crowded day and night. So, there I was, observing people of every shape and size one can imagine and each one unique in their own way. Different walking styles, talking styles, dressing sense and whatnot. It was interesting to watch people from all walks of like travelling together. There was a celebrity, an old woman travelling alone, a army officer with gunmen and many more but none were similar. There were these chauffeurs from different hotels standing next to me waving the boards hoping that the next person out of the doors would be for them. Some of them were cursing their employers for making them wait at the airport, some were simply standing quietly, and some were just talking away to glory on their cellphones. The whole experience was very interesting and I would not have been able to witness the scene if the plane was on time.

Flickr vs. Picasa Web Albums

flickr_logo_gammav127.gif

versus

picasaweblogo-en_us.gif

I couldn’t find a good comparison of the upgraded versions of the best online photo album so I decided to write one myself. This was originally meant for a friend but I thought everyone could benefit from this. Now lets get on with the reviews.

Space
One of the most important and basic features of any image hosting or web album service is the storage limitations. First, lets see the free accounts. In Flickr, there is a 100Mb upload limit per month but not storage limitations or thats what people think. There is a limit of 200 images with a maximum of 5Mb per image which means the limit is around 1000MB for a free account. In Picasa Web Albums, there is a specified limit of 1024MB or 1GB, and a limit of 10MB for each image. Picasa wins here because we can store as many images as we want within the 1024MB.
Now, lets move to paid accounts. Flickr has a fee of US$24.95 a year for a Pro Account. With a Pro Account, all your limitations are removed and you can upload an unlimited amount of images. Even if your Pro Account expires, the images will not be deleted and can be recovered if you pay for the next year. Picasa Web Albums has a slightly different approach with a increasing price for increasing storage limits. For US$25 a year, which is about the same as Flickr, we can buy upto 7GB of storage. This increases in 4 levels upto 251GB at US$500 a year.

Sets/Collections/Albums
A simple way of organizing your images is by putting similar images together in albums. This is very helpful in sorting out images. Once again we’ll observe free accounts at first. Flickr has a limit of 3 set in a free account and collections (a group of sets) are available only for Pro Accounts. Picasa Web Albums has no limit and you can add as many albums as you want but you cannot add sub-albums. But you only add 500 images per album. For paid accounts, there is no difference in Picasa but in Flickr, you can add as many sets and collections as you want. Sets can be defined as sub-albums and the collections can be albums.

Organizing
Flickr has a interactive AJAX Organizer for organizing the images. In this organizer, you can add or modify sets and collections, tag pictures, share your images with your groups, add geo-location tags for the images, edit the permission and captions for the images and do minor editing like rotating, etc. A batch editing feature is also available. Picasa also features a AJAX organiser for arranging images within an album. Adding of image captions is pretty simple and the images do not require a separate image title.

Layout / Viewing
In Flickr, you can alter the layout of the pages to a certain extent with pre-designed layouts. You have an option of 4 layouts for the free version and 6 layouts for the paid version. The visitor can also choose to download different sizes of the same image. Picasa Web Albums does not allow you to change the layout but while viewing the albums, anyone can dynamically change the size of the thumbnails which is pretty good and useful feature. The visitor can also choose to download an entire album which saves time. Even while viewing a single image, you can zoom into the image and scroll around it within the browser itself.

Slideshow
In Flickr, the Slideshow is displayed via Flash and you can choose to display it in a pop-up window or withing the browser itself. It does not cover the entire screen and you have access to basic Slideshow controls. In Picasa Web Albums the Slideshow is displayed via AJAX and HTML and you choose to display the captions. The Slideshow covers the entire browser viewing area and also has the basic controls.

Uploading & Comments
In Flickr, images can be uploaded through the browser, mobile phone, email or Flickr’s software for PC, Mac or Linux. The commenting system is fine, you can also subscribe to the RSS Feed of your comments. You need to be registered to post comments. In Picasa Web Albums ,uploading can either be done through Picasa or via the browser, a plugin is also provided for Mac users. The commenting system is basic but does its job. You need to have a Google Account to post comments.

Misc. Features
In Flickr, you can add notes to individual pictures which will be displayed when the user hovers his mouse over certain areas in the image. Flickr has a API which is useful for integration into websites. Picasa’s most remarkable feature is that it also supports the uploading of videos which can be viewed as a streaming video. Picasa has just released a API Feature so it will take some time before services are developed for it.

Verdict
For free accounts, go Google and use Picasa Web Albums. It supports more images and albums and even though it lacks a few features, one can manage without them. So, if you do not wish to pay and have a simple and good web album, use Picasa. You may opt for Flickr for a feature rich but limited album.
If you are willing to pay $2 per month, then Flickr is your best friend, with unlimited images and sets, there is virtually no limit to what you can do with Flickr.

Another different alternative is DeviantART although it is not intended for usage as a web album but rather as a showcase for your art. You may try it out but it will not have features like Flickr or Picasa Web Albums since it was not meant to be an photo album.

The choice is yours to make depending on your requirements and thoughts.

Thanks for reading this review, I hope you enjoyed reading it. If you feel that I may have missed out something that is worth mentioning, please feel free to post in the comments.

How I spent the International Shutdown Day

Its been 36 hours since I’ve used the computer. I felt the urge to switch on the PC many times during the day but suppressed them and thus, successfully spent the International Shutdown Day without using the PC. I discovered so many new and different methods to keep myself busy and entertained. Unexpectedly, I enjoyed the day and didnt miss the using the PC towards the end of the day. Although I was faced with a whole load of unread news and blogs today, I enjoyed yesterday so much that I thought I would probably allocate a Personal Shutdown Day every month or so. It would be a good relief from the everyday hassle of using the PC. Overall, the International Shutdown Day has certainly enlightened me and I feel that everyone to try out something like this one time or another.

And I just cant tell you how much I love Google Personalized Homepages!

I also finally added captions for the ‘In & Out of Class‘ and ‘Special Days‘ sub-sections so now you can know more about every picture.

Shutdown Day and Google Homepage

Tomorrow is the 24th of March 2007, also known as the International Shutdown Day in which people all over the world will be switching off their computers for one day. It’s an experiment to find out how many people can go without their computer for 24 hours and how many just cant stay without using their PC. I’m also taking part and will try to got for a day without using my PC. Anyone can participate in this and I strongly recommend that everyone tries this out.

I’ve been partially using Google Personalized Homepages for about a few months. Google recently added dynamic themes to the pages which gave them a whole new look and a motivation for me to start using it full time. You can add your own RSS Feeds or select from the given RSS Feeds and various useful gadgets. Now, Google has given me a great reason to utilize Google Homepages to their full potential. Try it out here.

Preview : Sony DSC - H9

The first appearance of the H9 was in Engadget’s exclusive preview. At that time, not much was known about this camera except for the basic features. Sony recently updated their website with more details about the H9. It is said to ship on the 11th of May, a good 2 months away. Before that I thought I’d give a detailed preview about this camera to prospective buyers. I will also be referring to the low-end version of the H9, the H7 in this preview.

sony_h9_frontback-small.jpg

The H9 has a similar build like all its predecessors of the ‘H’ series of cameras. The new features when compared to the H5 which its replacing are not much. The megapixel count has increased to 8.1 as compared to 7.2 which is not a remarkable upgrade.

One new and noteworthy feature when considering the build of the camera is that the LCD is now of a swivel type with sturdy hinges as can be observed in this image. The size of the screen is 3 inches in the H9 and 2.5 inches in the H7. Only the H9 has the swivel LCD.

sony_h9_3qtrrear-small.jpg

The lens has also been improved by a minuscule amount. Although Sony claims that it has a 15x zoom as compared to the earlier 12x zoom, the change is not very much when seen in terms of focal length. The older cameras had a focal length of 6 - 72 mm and the new ones have a focal length of 5.2 - 78 mm. The increase is a negligible amount and will not matter much while taking images.

Shutter Speed has doubled from the previous 1/2000 sec to a super fast 1/4000 sec. The Burst Mode has also doubled from 1.1fps to 2.2fps. The image processor has also been improved and uses the Sony Bionz engine which was earlier seen in the Alpha series. It uses the D-Range Optimization so that taking images in tricky lighting conditions is easier.

Taking images in the dark is now a breeze with a spectacular sensitivity of 3200 ISO. Sony has also introduced a NightShot mode in the H9 which takes images in near darkness with Infrared technology using an in-built infrared emitter. This is certainly a useful feature.

sony_h9_side-small.jpg

It also has Image Stabilization which is now a standard feature of the ‘H’ series. Face Detection is a completely new feature and promises to deliver better facial expressions in every picture, it supports upto 8 faces in every image. It now has a 9 point Auto Focus as compared to a 3 point Auto Focus previously.

A feature totally new to Sony Cameras is ‘In-Camera’ effects which allows you to apply several interesting effects to your images within the camera itself. It also has a Lithium-Ion battery which is supposed to last for 250 shots. This is infact a downgrade from the H5 which had ‘AA’ batteries but could take upto 340 shots.

Both the H9 and H7 support HD output with a Slideshow mode and music playback too. Unfortunately, the cable for HD output is sold separately and costs $40. The cameras can handle Memory Stick Duos upto a capacity of 8Gb which can hold around 1400 images.

The most important feature would be that it supports remote control which can be used to control basic camera functions. This is a feature which was only found in DSLRs until now.

sony_h9_3qtrfront-small.jpg

Verdict

The H9 is an excellent camera and a good DSLR replacement. It is priced at $480 and is worth the price. It is recommended for the people who want to venture into professional photography but don’t want to buy a DSLR first. People who already own a ‘H’ series camera can wait for a better model since it does not offer a great change over the H2 and H5. If you have already owned a prosumer camera, you should probably buy a DSLR.

The H7 has a great value for money at $400. It offers most of the features of the H9 except for a few like Nightshot, 3 inch swivel LCD, etc but you can manage without those features. It’s a great buy for the people who have a limited budget but want to have a taste to professional cameras.

Update : Megapixel.net has released a comprehensive review of the Sony DSC - H9. Take a look at it here. You can also read the detailed review by DPReview.com here.

Thanks for taking time to read this preview.
