5 Features I would like to see in Orkut
Posted in News, School |Orkut. One of the hundreds of social networking sites out there. But with a difference. Its owned by Google. I too got caught in the web of ‘orkutting’ recently but I’m not addicted to it like many people I know. Its a fun site for meeting old and new friends and a great way to pass time.
Here is a list of 5 features which I would like to see in Orkut -
1. Comments on images
This is something that I have always wanted. Everytime I see a picture in a friend’s album, I have to go to his scrapbook and describe the picture and comment on it which is not worth the effort. A simple commenting system would do well and be a great to lots of ‘orkutters’.
2. Allow more than 1000 friends.
I probably dont have that many friends but I know people who do and once you hit 1000, you cant accept or send any friend request which pretty much sucks. I’m sure Google can spare a few databases for this.
3. Dynamically updating Scrapbook with AJAX
Refreshing the scrapbook is something I really hate when I’m in a conversation with someone through the scrap system. Everytime I want to see the reply, I have to refresh the page which get tedious in a long conversation. This shouldnt be a tough job for Google since even I’ve got it on the chatbox on my other site.
4.Option to disallow public viewing of your scrapbook
Sometimes, you just dont want other people nosing into your conversations, and when you’re scrapping someone, its just like an IM convo and you might reveal some details which you wouldnt want others to know. So, there should be an option to block public viewing of the scrapbook AND to allow specific people to view it since you might want some close friends to see your scrapbook.
5.More than 12 photos in the album
Yes, I know that 12 is a magic ‘nember’ but 12 photos are just not enough. Personally, I dont use more than 5 - 6 photos since I have a gallery on this site. They could integrate it with Picasa Web Albums which would totally rock.
Features I love in Orkut
The recently added ‘Videos’ feature is great. It integrates with Youtube and Google Video and lets you choose a list of favourite videos. You can edit the description of the videos too to meet your needs. This is an excellent feature.
The integration between Google Talk and Orkut is also fabulous and it has done a lot to make ‘orkutting’ easier. You can view a person’s Orkut profile through GTalk. It also informs you of new scraps you recieve via a nifty pop-up in the bottom right corner of your screen.
