It all comes down to this……

The next 90 years of our lives will be (most probably) decided in the next month. It is the single most important exam for many of us. The exams which we have dreaded ever since we joined 11th. The 12th ISC Board Exams. And its starts tomorrow. The test of everything we’ve studied in the past 2 years.

I think I’m prepared for it. We’ve got English I tomorrow and it should be easy.

This also means that no more internet-surfing-every-30 minutes. So, Good Luck to everyone and hope we get some lenient invigilators.

And updated my Wishlist too. :D

Cameras and more…

I did a lot of research on DSLRs, Lenses and lots of technical information about cameras today and I would like to share some of the elements of my research with you.

Many people would know that Megapixel is not everything. Since Megapixel is calculated by multiplying the width and height, it is a square value rather than a linear value. For example, a 25 megapixel image is NOT 25 times larger than a 1 megapixel image but only 5 times larger. So, the difference between a 7 megapixel and 8 megapixel image is negligible. And therefore a camera’s megapixel is not the only thing which determines its value. This is known as the Megapixel Myth.

Another feature which people think is important is the ‘x’ zoom value. People think a 3x zoom camera is better than a 5x zoom but this is not necessarily true in all situations. In point-and-shoot cameras, this can be trusted to a certain level. But when we progress to Prosumers and DSLRs, we cannot trust this figure. The ‘x’ value is determined by dividing the maximum focal length by the minimum focal length. A camera has higher zoom range when it has a higher focal length. A camera with 2mm - 20mm may boast of a 10x zoom level but its pretty useless when compared to camera with a focal length of 8mm - 40mm which has a wider range although it only has a 5x zoom. Therefore, one should check the focal length also when buying a camera. The largest range of focal length is boasted by the Tamron A18 which has a focal length of 18-250mm.

On the front of a lens, most of use must have seen some numbers on it which we never bothered to understand. I’ll simplify it for you. The ratio ‘1:x-y’ is the maximum aperture from the wide-angle to the telephoto end. At the wide-angle end, ‘x’ is the maximum aperture and at the telephoto end’y’ is the maximum aperture. The minimum aperture is not mentioned since it is not considered to be as important. Lenses with a fixed aperture throughout are considered superior and have a ratio like ‘1:x’ since the value of the maximum aperture does not change.

There will also be another pair of values which is the focal length of the camera. On some cameras, they are marked with ‘mm’ so that they are easy to spot while on others, they just say ‘a-b’.

So, while buying a camera or a lens, one should make note of the focal length and aperture rather than the ‘x’ zoom value. Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Shantaram

Shantaram‘ by “Gregory David Roberts” has to be the longest book I’ve ever read at 936 pages. And I loved every single page of it. Its a true story about how Roberts escaped from the Australian prison a fleed to Bombay. His life there, in the slums, with the underworld, at war in Afghanistan and even in Bollywood is enthralling and spectacular. Its hard to believe that an outsider has explored more of Bombay than most of us. The book itself is extremly well written and while reading it, I felt as if I was a part of his life. I shared his joys and sorrows and felt saddened when one of his friends died. Each moment of his life has been carefully described in this spectacular book. It took a long time to read though, around a fortnight or so. It gets 9/10. There are plans to make it into a movie too.

School and Kites

I went to school today. I had some doubts in B.Maths. I expected to be bored sitting all alone and asking doubts. And just when I thought that, I stepped into class to be greeted by the smiling faces of many friends. It was a pleasant surprise. We all sat and talked around about preparations and cleared our doubts with each other and teachers. It was a good  meeting, a break from study.

I have added the pictures which I took during Sankranti of Kite Flying in the gallery.

The gallery is finally working again. You can comment on Individual Pictures now. You can view the images at a low-res in your browser but when you save the picture to your computer, its in high-res. I’m still perfecting it at the moment but you can use most of the features. I still have to add captions to the pictures though.

Nizam Mean Time

Nizam Mean Time (NMT) is a timezone which is independant of geographical loations. It can be obtained by subtracting one hour from the local time zone. For example, if the time according to the Indian Standard Time (IST) is 12:30, then the time according to the Nizam Mean Time will be 11:30.

The Nizam Mean Time has its origins in the city of Hyderabad which was under the rule of the Nizams until 1948. The Nizam Mean Time is still in use today but is currently only used for social gatherings of leisure and entertainment.
